Common questions

Questions we are asked most

Short answers to the things people ask before they call. Anything else, just get in touch.

How long do I need to keep my business records?
All tax records and business documents need to be kept for six years. The six-year period begins later if the tax returns are filed late, so the best practice is to keep all supporting documents for seven years. Our record retention calculator works out your own date.
When do I have to register for HST/GST?
Registration is required once a sole proprietor has more than $30,000 of sales. You can also choose to register voluntarily before reaching that threshold, which sometimes makes sense if you are paying HST on business purchases.
What is a Notice to Reader, and why is my bank asking for one?
A compilation engagement, often called a Notice to Reader or NTR, is a set of financial statements compiled by a Chartered Professional Accountant from the information you provide. Banks, lenders and shareholders commonly ask for one. We prepare NTRs.
Do you work with other accountants and bookkeepers?
Yes. We consult for accounting and bookkeeping firms on complex files — joint ventures, real estate developers, tax planning for shareholder remuneration, and framing responses to CRA audit inquiries and re-assessments. You keep the client relationship.
What do you need from me to prepare a personal tax return?
It depends on your situation. For a straightforward return, your slips and receipts are usually enough. If property is involved there may be elections, rollovers or designations to consider, and the principal residence exemption needs to be addressed properly at the time a property is sold. Get in touch and we will send you a list specific to your circumstances.
